Our Sleep Treatment Team
Sleep apnoea is a medical condition characterized by repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep.
These interruptions, known as apnoeas, can last from a few seconds to a minute or more and often disrupt normal sleep patterns, leading to poor-quality rest. There are three main types of sleep apnoea:
Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA):
- This is the most common type.
- It occurs when the muscles at the back of the throat relax too much, causing a temporary blockage of the airway.
- Risk factors include obesity, age, smoking, and anatomical features like a narrow airway.
Central Sleep Apnoea (CSA):
- Central Sleep Apnoea (CSA):This is less common.
- It happens when the brain fails to send proper signals to the muscles that control breathing.
- It is often associated with conditions like heart failure, stroke, or the use of certain medications.
Complex or Mixed Sleep Apnoea Syndrome:
A combination of both obstructive and central sleep apnoea.
Complex sleep apnea is a form of sleep apnea that can develop when a person is receiving treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
